Opening a sick and care leave
Certificate of incapacity for work (TVL) / care leave certificate (HL):
If you need a certificate of incapacity for work, please notify us via e-Perearstikeskus or by phone on the day you become ill. It is important to know that sick leave / care leave certificates cannot be issued retroactively.
A family doctor can issue a sick leave or care leave certificate for an illness that began during the weekend if the patient has called the family doctor advisory line at 1220, visited a hospital emergency department, or called an ambulance, and has been issued a corresponding certificate. This certificate must be submitted to the family doctor within two days.
When opening a certificate of incapacity for work, a contact date will be agreed upon, on which the patient must report on their state of health either by phone or through e-Perearstikeskus. It is important to always follow the agreed dates and contact the family medical center yourself. If you fail to make contact on the agreed date, your certificate of incapacity for work will, in accordance with the law, be closed as of the agreed contact date without separate notification within three days after the agreed date.
In case of illness abroad, you must immediately contact a healthcare institution in the foreign country where the illness will be documented. Then, together with the certificate from the foreign doctor, you must also submit a certificate from your employer to the Health Insurance Fund. More information:

Any issued certificate of incapacity for work / care leave certificate must be medically justified.
