Breastfeeding counseling

Contact a lactation consultant when you feel that:

    • starting or continuing breastfeeding is difficult.
    • breastfeeding is painful, uncomfortable or stressful.
    • you are not sure if the baby has the correct latch.
    • you need advice on different breastfeeding positions.
    • you do not have enough breast milk.
    • the baby is restless at the breast or wants to be nursed very often.
    • the baby is not gaining enough weight.
    • you want or need to feed the baby with alternative methods (cup, syringe, spoon, tube) using breast milk or formula and you need advice on this.
    • you need advice on starting solid foods.
    • you need advice on various breast problems: nipple cracks, engorgement, thrush, prevention, relief, and treatment of mastitis.
    • you need advice on weaning your child.
    • you have other concerns or questions related to breastfeeding, baby and motherhood.

A lactation consultant does not diagnose breast diseases but can provide appropriate recommendations for any issues that arise and, if necessary, advise you to visit a breast clinic, family doctor, or gynecologist.

When coming to the appointment:

It is advisable to bring your baby to the lactation consultant appointment. During the appointment, the baby can also be weighed to determine how much they are eating from the breast. For a successful trial feeding, try to schedule your baby’s next feeding around the time of the appointment or wait at least 1-2 hours since the last feeding.

Dress comfortably for the appointment, and if possible, bring spare clothes and diapers for the baby. You can also bring a list of pre-written questions and your baby’s feeding schedule with you to the consultation.

Breastfeeding counseling is free for a person insured by the Estonian Health Insurance Fund.

The service is provided by a midwife who has undergone specialized training.
