Opening a sick and care leave

If you need a certificate for sick leave or care leave (caring for a child or family member), you need to call your family doctor on the first day of illness. It is important to know that you cannot open a sick leave/care leave afterwards.

The family doctor can open a certificate for sick leave or care leave for an illness that started over the weekend if the patient has called the family doctor helpline 1220, visited the hospital emergency room, or called an ambulance, and has been given a respective certificate. The patient must submit the certificate to the family doctor within two days.

If you fall ill abroad, you must immediately seek medical attention in the foreign country, and get an official confirmation of the illness. Then, together with the respective certificate, you must also submit a certificate from your employer to the Health Insurance Fund. When opening the sick leave certificate, a date is agreed upon when the patient must report about their health condition either by phone or e-perearstikeskus application. Please always adhere to the agreed dates and contact the family medical center by yourself. If you do not contact us on the specified day, we will terminate your sick leave certificate in accordance with the law on the agreed contact day without sending you a separate notice of this within three days.
